Meth problem to be addressed in Staples
STAPLES -- Methamphetamine will be the discussion topic 5-8 p.m. April 21 at the Staples Community Center.
The Staples Motley Area Chamber of Commerce CrimeWatch Committee, with partial funding support from the Lakewood Health System Foundation, has devoted the past several months to providing educational forums and other activities with the goal of telling people about the dangers of making methamphetamine, using methamphetamine and exposing children to environments where meth is made or used.
The project will conclude April 21 with a neighborhood block party. This is an opportunity for neighbors to come together to learn more about what they can do to keep their neighborhood safe from methamphetamine.
Talk with law enforcement officers about when and what to report. Talk with DNR officers about the effects clandestine meth labs have on forests and lakes. Talk with representatives from treatment centers and learn that there is hope of recovery from meth addiction. Talk with child protection and social services personnel about the effects meth is having on families. Find out how tax dollars are being spent to fight the effects of meth.
The event will include music, skits by area church youth and hot dogs.
After the block party, David Parnell will tell the story of his suicide attempt as a result of his 23-year addiction to drugs. His talk will be at Centennial Auditorium.
Both events are free to the public. For more information, call Lakewood Health System at (218) 894-8332 or Barb Cline at Central Lakes College at (218) 894-5120.
