LOCAL BRIEFS Cass judge is finalist for Minnesota Court of Appeals
Judge John P. Smith, a Ninth Judicial District trial court bench judge in Cass County, is one of three finalists for the Eighth Congressional District vacancy on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
The other finalists for the seat that will open April 4, after the retirement of Judge R.A. "Jim" Randall, are attorneys Sean Quinn and Lawrence "Larry" B. Stauber, both of Duluth.
Smith, of Nevis, has been a judge since 1991. He was chief judge of the Ninth Judicial District from 2003 to 2007 and assistant chief judge from 2001 to 2003. Previously, he was an attorney and partner with the Park Rapids law firm of Smith and Hunter from 1975 to 1991. Smith earned his master of law degree from Emory University in Atlanta in 1987, his juris doctorate degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul in 1975 and his bachelor of arts degree from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1971.
Brainerd Warrior dance team members earn awards
The Brainerd Warrior dance team recently conducted its banquet.
Awards for the 2007-08 junior varsity team were:
Best kicks, Jamie Brutcher; best heads, Lisa Anderson; best toe touches, Lilly Anderson and Sammy Gonnion; best faces, Greta Gilbertson; best tightness, Gilbertson and Jordyn Hollingsworth; best motivator/leader, Brutcher and Anderson; best turns, Becca Schubert; best attitude, Riley Heilman; most improved, Gonnion; and most valuable dancer, Heilman.
The varsity team awards were:
Team player award, Erin LePage, Melissa Holland, Karissa Meyer, Katelyne Sobiech and Heilman; best leaps, Taylor Rozinka and runner-up was Kelsey Villwock; best kicks, Kayelee Gill-Davidge and runner-up, Katie Gessell; toe touches, Rozinka and runner-up, Sarah Stricker; turns, Villwock and runner-up, Emily Holland; and Chelsea Doyscher earned the biggest motivator, most helpful, most dependable and most valuable dancer awards;
Best facials, Rozinka; quickest learners, Holland and Villwock; stick tight award, Madisyn Hilborn and Melissa Holland; most organized, Alyssa Marlatt; hardest worker, Bailey Geraets and Villwock tied and Doyscher was runner-up; most optimistic, Stricker, Brittney Schubert, Kandi Jo Zelinske, Doyscher, Villwock, Hilborn and Gessell; best heads, Geraets; best toes, Gessell; kick form, Amber Erickson; hardest working swing, Heilman; most improved vet, Brittany Hanson and Ashley Tuthill; most improved rookie, Lilly Anderson and Katie Nelsen was runner up; rookie of the year, Kaytlyn Wynn and Katie Pohl was runner-up.
Doyscher, Erickson, Stricker and Melissa Holland were named Academic All-State and Villwock was elected captain for next season.
Thrift store seeks food donations
The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Brainerd is asking people to donate a food item this week.
The thrift store is at 609 Norwood St. and those donating will receive 15 percent off a purchase at the store.
