WALKER - Cass County Board voted to ask Minnesota Department of Transportation to conduct a speed survey on County State Aid Highway 77 around Gull Lake.
This action came in response to a citizen request from Paul Welch of Baxter, who indicated in a letter to County Engineer David Enblom that he believes the area around CSAH 77 and Pine Beach Peninsula should have the speed reduced from 55 to 30 miles per hour.
Counties do not set state aid highway speeds. MnDOT determines those speeds based on the average speed motorists use in a given area of highway as well as type of road, location, road length, existing traffic controls, accident history, traffic volume, site distances and test drive results.
The board voted to support application for a $250,000 Federal Highway Administration grant to match a $112,000 MnDOT grant to move and restore Pine River Depot.
A board motion, in the event the city decides against owning the building, that would have had the county assume ownership and pass ownership to Pine River Heritage failed. Only Commissioners Bob Kangas and Virgil Foster voted for it.
The county has agreed, however, to serve as fiscal agent for the project if the city assumes ownership and the grants are funded. The grants would pay to move the building away from Highway 371 right-of-way and to restore the structure.
