Jail inmates to get cold breakfasts
WALKER - The Cass County Board voted Tuesday to change the inmate menu for Cass County jail from hot to cold breakfasts as a cost-saving measure when the county begins boarding some inmates at Crow Wing County this spring.
Jail Administrator Bert Woodford told the board jail bed slots will be filled first at Crow Wing County, meaning fewer inmates will be housed in the Cass County jail.
Costs per meal are based on the number of inmates served. By going to cold breakfasts, costs can be kept in the same range to serve a few inmates as hot meals would be for serving a larger number of inmates, he explained.
Cass County has notified Aitkin and Morrison counties that Cass will cease boarding Cass prisoners in those counties as of June 1.
The Cass County overflow inmate population will be moved to the new Crow Wing County facility by that date.
