Staff Writer BAXTER - A father and son were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire early Tuesday damaged their Baxter home.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 4:51 a.m. at the home of Mike and Melissa Barron on the 10000 block of Lancer Drive in west Baxter.
Brainerd Fire Chief Fred Underhill said the fire, which started in material surrounding a water heater, was contained to one room. There was smoke damage throughout the home. Firefighters were on the scene until 8 a.m.

Mike Barron and his teenage son, Zachary Barron, were checked at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd for smoke inhalation and released, Underhill said. Melissa and a teenage daughter, Karlye Barron, were not injured.
"The smoke detectors worked, which is a great thing," Underhill said. He said the American Red Cross assisted the family in finding temporary housing.
Also responding to the scene were the Baxter Police Department, North Ambulance, the State Patrol and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department.
