Barn burns
Woman is hospitalized
By MATT ERICKSON
Staff Writer
A fire Monday afternoon in southwest Baxter left a barn in ashes and sent a woman to St. Joseph's Medical Center.
The Brainerd Fire Department reported that the barn of Mark and Deborah Rudningen was a total loss. Damage was estimated at $30,000.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Brainerd Fire Department, but Fire Chief Kevin Mahle said it appears as if a heat lamp was tipped over in the barn, starting some hay on fire.
"That's the way we're leaning, but nothing is set in stone yet," he said.
The Rudningens lost several goats and chickens in the fire. Mahle said the Rudningen's son apparently tried to gain entry into the barn during the fire, but he was unable to because of the amount of smoke and high heat coming off of the fire.
Deborah Rudningen was treated at St. Joseph's Medical Center for smoke inhalation.
