Two Lake Hubert homes burn
Tipped grill, wind cited
Fire destroyed two houses Wednesday night on the east shore of Lake Hubert.

Firefighters from seven departments battled the fires at the two houses, located next to each other on Blue Herron Lane in Lake Edward Township north of Brainerd. The fire was reported at 7:04 p.m.

Both houses were considered a complete loss, Nisswa Fire Chief Richard Geike said. One of the homeowners told firefighters they had been using a grill outside and it was tipped over by the wind, starting the fire, Geike said.

Smoke from the fires could be seen from Brainerd and filled the woods and marshes to the east of Blue Herron Lane. Ash and other debris from the burning houses scattered hundreds of yards away from the fire.

The fire, aided by a strong west wind rolling off Lake Hubert, left little more than the stone and wooden shells of the houses standing just an hour after the fire was reported. Geike said by 10 p.m. both houses had completely collapsed.

"The wind off lake was unbelievable," Geike said.

Fire trucks raced back and forth along nearby Crow Wing County Road 137, delivering water to firefighters at the burning houses.

Firefighters also sprayed water on nearby towering pines that started smoldering. Smaller trees and grass also were scorched by the fire.

There were houses on either side of the two that burned, Geike said, but neither were damaged by the fire. And outside of a few small spot fires around the properties, the fire also was kept out of the surrounding woods, he said.

No one was injured in the fire, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department reported.

Firefighters from Nisswa, Ideal Township, Mission Township, Crosslake, Pequot Lakes, Brainerd and the DNR responded to the fires. The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department, Breezy Point Police Department and North Ambulance assisted.
