Fargo man sentenced in stabbing of Brainerd native
FARGO - A 28-year-old Fargo man was sentenced Friday to 10 years in jail for his attack in June on Todd Koering, 35, a Brainerd native and North Dakota State University assistant men's basketball coach.

Travis Lium was sentenced to five years in jail on each felony count of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment to be served consecutively. He was given credit for 312 days served.

Lium was charged with stabbing Koering, a Brainerd High School graduate, and hitting Koering with a motor vehicle. Fargo police said the attack was motivated by a romantic rivalry, according to The Associated Press. Koering, who suffered two stab wounds near his shoulder blade and scrapes and bruises to his hips and legs, previously told the Fargo Forum that the woman he had been dating for two months had broken up with Lium about a year before.

Koering told The Forum that he had met the woman for lunch and the two went to her apartment to drop off a birthday cake for her son when Lium showed up. Koering said Lium tried to enter the front door, but it was locked. He then went to the back door and "went right at me," Koering said.

Koering told The Forum that Lium put him in a headlock, grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the back.

Koering said he got away from Lium and ran to a parking lot to call 911 on his cell phone. He said Lium then tried to run him over with his automobile. Koering said he jumped as it hit him and he landed on the hood before falling off. He also told The Forum that Lium then put the automobile in reverse and tried to hit him again.

According to The Forum, Koering said he had never had contact with Lium before the attack. The newspaper reported that Lium was a Fargo South graduate and the son of the late Tom Lium, who won 427 games as a head boys basketball coach, including a state championship at Fargo South.

Koering is in his sixth season as an assistant coach at NDSU.
