NISSWA -- Stillwater singer-songwriter Peter Mayer will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 23 at the Nisswa Community Center as part of the Grassroots Concerts series.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children accompanied by an adult.
Known for his storytelling skills, Mayer has found an ever-widening audience since 1993, when he released his first CD. His six albums have sold more than 40,000 copies. His most recent release is 2002's "Earth Town Square."
Audiences across the country have relished Mayer's songs about the beauty and mystery of the world. With a background in theology, Mayer is not big on love songs. He prefers delving into science, nature and spirituality, often whimsically.
"The Birthday Party" describes a journey shared by Buddha and Mohammed to Jerusalem for Jesus' 2,000th birthday party. "Everything is Holy Now" urges appreciation for everyday miracles in the physical world. "Winter Woods" describes the experience of rapture in a grove of snow-covered birch and pine.
Mayer's accolades include numerous nominations for Minnesota Music Awards and selection as a finalist in songwriting competitions such as the Telluride and Rocky Mountain folk festivals in Colorado.
"I am one of those people who has the luxury of staring out the window and wondering what life is all about," Mayer told the Star Tribune. "I think that's a luxury many people in the world don't have because they're struggling hard just to survive."
Concert-goers are invited to bring non-perishable food for the Salvation Army food shelf. For information, call 963-2976 or 746-3930 or visit www.grassrootsconcerts.org.
