Erin Donnelly is the first to concede defense makes her a winning pitcher.
The Brainerd Warriors' senior right-hander isn't overpowering. She relies on location, throwing strikes and getting ground balls. Donnelly and the defending section champion Warriors are off to a 3-0 start.
"Defense, I couldn't do without," Donnelly said. "They make the team. This isn't an individual sport. It's a team effort. Without the team, I'm nothing. They're just unbelievable. They're always giving their all, everyone on the team, not just people who are playing right now."
Donnelly has pitched all 21 innings this season. She has given up 27 hits and struck out just 10. But she has walked only two batters and has a respectable 3.33 ERA.
In a 3-0 season-opening victory against Sartell, 47 of the 60 pitches Donnelly threw were for strikes. She gave up just three hits, walked none and went to no three-ball counts.

In a 7-3 win at Rocori, Donnelly struck out three and walked two.
"Rocori was probably one of the best games we've played just because we were down 3-0 after the first and didn't score until the fourth," Donnelly said. "That just shows a lot about our team. Nobody gave up, not even the coaches. They had faith in us. They kept telling us we could do it and it paid off in the end."
Warriors coach Mike Zauhar said Donnelly is one of the most competitive players he has coached.
"I've had quite a few athletes over the years and you see that quality where when the going gets tough they're so focused they just remain on course as to what needs to be done," Zauhar said. "Erin's got that quality. She's just mentally tough.
"She also does a nice job fielding her position, and she's batting fourth, which is just outstanding with our lineup, and she has delivered in that position."
Donnelly was one of the Warriors' leading hitters last season with a .333 average and six extra-base hits. She has gotten off to a slow start this spring, going 2-for-9 (.222).
"I owe a lot to (assistant coach Dan Bzdok) on hitting," Donnelly said. "This week we're working on it. We're working with my stance. It feels a lot better."
Zauhar said Donnelly has qualities that all captains should possess.
"She's a very modest person, which is refreshing," he said. "She's just a fun athlete to work with. No matter what you tell her to do she's going to attempt it and make no excuses.
"She's just an outstanding athlete. I'm very pleased to coach her. I know early we're going to ride her as long as we can. That allows us to keep Megan Arns at shortstop.
Other notable efforts by Warriors:
Maria Swanson, track and field, won the shot put and discus vs. Bemidji and Detroit Lakes.
Blake Eller, baseball, was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI against Alexandria.
