Report given on county's cost for chemical dependency treatments
Cass County Correspondent BACKUS - Frank Schaap, adult services supervisor, reported to the Cass County Board Tuesday on the county's costs for detoxification and chemical dependency treatment.
He said 70 percent of chemical dependency abuse in the county is alcohol. There are more people coming into the county's jail who are chemically dependent than in previous years, Schaap said.
More people today have a combination of chemical dependency and mental illness than in the past, he added.
Of the people whom the county sends to detoxification centers for an average of about three days, most are offered the option to enter inpatient treatment after that. Some repeat the process a few times. Some stay away from alcohol and drugs after the first treatment program.
There are about one-third of those who go through treatment repeatedly, but may never dry out, Schaap said. The average age of those entering treatment is 35 to 45 years, he said.
