Scholarships available for Pine River-Backus area youths
PINE RIVER -- Pine River-Backus Youth As Resources is helping sponsor a $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarship for the Pine River-Backus area.

The Presidential Freedom Scholarship program is designed to highlight and promote service and citizenship by students and to recognize students for their leadership in those areas.

Through the program, each high school in the country may select up to two students to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership in service to their community. With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 from the community.

Eligible students must have been either a high school junior or senior in the 2004-2005 school year, have contributed at least 100 hours of service in the past 12 months (about two hours a week), be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and plan to attend an institution of higher education in the United States.

For more information and an application, contact PR-B YAR Adult Coordinator Nolita Christensen at the Pine River-Backus Family Center at (218) 587-4292 or at the_nolita@yahoo.com. Applications are also available at the Pine River-Backus High School Guidance Office. Application deadline is May 5.
