Area students place at state speech tournament
The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley speech team won three gold medals in the Class A state speech tournament Saturday in Bloomington.

Kaitlyn Berry won in Serious Interpretation of Poetry, Josh Plattner won in Storytelling and Tyler Westfield won in Discussion.

Returning medalists Carissa Chase, Katie Knight and Samantha Mueller earned their third medals, as did Jake Scott of Pequot Lakes.

Returning area medalists who earned their second medals this year included Plattner, Berry and Westfield.

Mounds Park Academy, which qualified 22 individuals, led all teams in total medal count with 11. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley qualified a tournament-leading 27 competitors and brought home 10 medals. Hermantown was third highest with nine medal winners. Staples-Motley sent 17 participants to the state meet.









With medals awarded to as many as eight top finishers, 41 schools were represented by students awarded medals for their 2005 state tournament performances.

There were 86 Class A teams represented at the tournament. There were 207 Class A teams that competed in speech statewide this year.

W-H-A claims 31 state speech champions between 1969 and 2005, good for fourth place on the list of Most State Champions-All Classes. With its 10 medals this year, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley still tops the list of top medal-winning Class A schools with 163.

Area Class A results include:

Creative Expression -- Scott, Pequot Lakes senior, third; Kelly Nelson, W-H-A junior, fifth; and Michael Rokenbrodt, Wadena-Deer Creek senior, eighth.

Discussion -- Westfield, W-H-A senior, first; and Willy Wepsala, W-H-A sophomore, fourth.

Extemporaneous Reading -- Chase, W-H-A junior, sixth.

Informative Speaking -- Knight, W-H-A senior, fifth.

Original Oratory -- Mueller, W-H-A senior, third; Mandy Heldman, Staples-Motley junior, sixth; and Brett Johnson, W-H-A freshman, eighth.

Serious Interpretation of Poetry -- Berry, W-H-A freshman, first; and Anton Jimenez, S-M junior, seventh.

Serious Interpretation of Prose -- Sarah Johnson, W-H-A sophomore, second; and Bernadette Shaffer, S-M senior, third.

Storytelling -- Plattner, W-H-A sophomore, first; and Ephrem Shaffer, S-M freshman, fourth.
