Couple pulling for Banjo to make it
Tim and Cindy Roggenkamp, Nisswa, said they weren't aware of a canine parvovirus concern when they adopted a puppy a week ago from Heartland Animal Rescue Team in Brainerd.
In an e-mail, they wrote, "We adopted one of the spaniel pups on (April 14), fell in love with him over the weekend, then Monday found out the devastating news that he had the parvo virus."
At the vet they said they were faced with euthanizing Banjo or spending $1,500-$2,000 for a treatment that only offered a 50/50 chance of survival. "We made the choice to give the guy a chance. Banjo is still in the animal hospital and may be until Monday, but we think he is going to make it, though that is far from certain at this point."
"(Banjo) has a great personality and is a fighter," they said. "We love the guy and would do it again, but I thought the story should be clarified."
They said they believe HART was not up front with them about the risk of the disease.
In a story in Friday's Dispatch, HART talked about the heartbreaking task of trying to combat the highly contagious parvo disease, which is especially a concern for puppies because of their immature immune systems.
Holly Ailts, HART executive director, who was not working on the day the Roggenkamps adopted the puppy, is not certain the Roggenkamps were warned of the parvo virus, although staff told her all who adopted a puppy from that litter were verbally informed of the parvo risk.
In the future, Ailts said HART will begin requiring those who adopt dogs or puppies to sign a waiver form indicating they've been informed of the risk of parvo.
"We're really grateful for them that they are fighting the fight for that puppy," Ailts said. "We wish we could have done it for the rest."
