Ward bill aims to prevent abrupt shutdowns of state programs
Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, has authored a bill that would require legislative approval before the Department of Human Services and State Operated Services shut down programs.
In February the department and State Operated Services closed the Brainerd Children and Adolescent Behavioral Systems program.
"With little warning and no real justification the CABHS program was shut down, leaving our community and our children stranded," Ward said in a statement.
The Brainerd program served young people with severe and major mental illness issues.
Ward said the CABHS program in Willmar remains open but is not large enough to take care of the needs of northern Minnesota.
