MCC offers inroads to a career in natural resources
The Minnesota Conservation Corps was built on the tradition of the famed Civilian Conservation Corps from the 1930s.
The MCC offers young people opportunities to work in conservation and benefit communities. Projects range from park improvements to fighting wildfires. The MCC has an eight-week summer youth residential program for teenagers from 15 to 18 years of age.
And the conservation corps has a service-learning program for 18- to 25-year-olds who provide 1,700 hours of service during a 10-month commitment.
The program provides extensive training for jobs in the natural resource conservation field and experience working with professionals.
Anna Lipenga, MCC northwest district manager in Brainerd, said the training comes in fighting wildfires, plant and tree identification and bioengineering. Actual experience in conservation work lets young people gain valuable connections for a career in natural resources.
"A lot of them say it's the best job they ever had," Lipenga said.
AmeriCorps education awards help participants pay off student loans or pay for ongoing education.
