Franklin service class helps spruce up Camp Confidence
Rosemarie Woodall, intern at Confidence Learning Center, had a chance Friday to see the Franklin Junior High School service class in action.
The class of 55 ninth-graders, taught by John Ward, visits Camp Confidence twice a year.
Next year the group will continue, but it will be renamed because of its relocation to the South Campus of Brainerd High School with the closing of Franklin.
Woodall will be in the Brainerd area until fall. She is an environmental education major who will complete her master's project at Antioch New England Graduate School-Kenne, N.H., with her work here. She is especially interested in the long-term benefits of the Camp Confidence experience for people with developmental disabilities.
"Ree," as she likes to be called, gained some good ideas on working with volunteer groups after her day with the Franklin students.
Woodall worked with the program group that spent the morning getting the archery area set up for campers. Other work groups included the wood splitters, haulers and stackers of firewood; the brushers; the landscapers; and the mulchers. Ward and Mary Harder, volunteer coordinator, emphasized the importance of the work the students did at Confidence Learning Center and in the community.
Besides the program staff, a large group of volunteers joined the students to help keep them organized and working hard. They included Pam Sachs, Al Larson, Linda Larson, Dave Barker, Joe Newfield, Steve Johnson, Diane Foss, Scott Foss, Al Johnson and Doris Gruzska. Many of these people are retired educators who still enjoy working with students.
