Scholarship available for female high school students
The National Rifle Association and the National Foundation for Women Legislators are co-sponsoring their eighth annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest, which this year will be titled Champions of Liberty.
The contest's seven winners each will receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to NFWL's annual conference in August where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.
This is an opportunity for young women to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of current issues and the U.S. Constitution, and develop their leadership skills. It is also a good opportunity to receive financial assistance with the cost of continuing education.
The essay must be postmarked by June 13 and received by NFWL no later than June 17. An NFWL selection committee will judge each essay and determine the seven winners. The judges will consider the factors of storytelling, understanding of the Bill of Rights and original insight.
For an application for the scholarship, visit the Web site www.womenlegislators.org/scholarships to download a copy. Applicants may call the NFWL's Scholarship Committee at (202) 293-3040, extension 1006, or send an e-mail to nfwl@womenlegislators.org to request a copy of the application.
For more information on the scholarship, call state Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie, at 1-800-709-07961, write her at 247 State Office Building, St. Paul, MN 55155 or e-mail her at rep.maryellen.otremba@house.mn.
