S-M speech team holds awards banquet
STAPLES -- The Staples Motley speech season ended with an annual awards banquet, where three speeches were given for the last time.
Sarah Fellman presented her Serious Drama Interpretation, "Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines"; Wyat Schwichtenberg and Jacob Smith presented their Duo Interpretation, "Railway Carriage Skit"; and Bernadette Shaffer presented her Serious Prose Interpretation, "Jacob Have I Loved."
Forty-one students earned varsity letters this season: Chandra Bergman, Chris Holst, Nathan Roth, Kirsten Haugen, Fellman, Christopher Olsen, Nick Waverek, Ann Motl, Luke Youngvorst, Jared Peterson, Kayla Peterson, Tracey Dullinger, Schwichtenberg, Smith, Emma Motl, Kaytlin Roth, Tim Thorman, Nathan Beard, Nikki Northquest, Gemma Shaffer, Megan Weyer, Becki Iverson, Carsten Hey, Mary Metzler, Jason Weyer, Katie Becker, Justin Edin, Arnt Diener, Mandy Heldman, Melody Fellman, Mike Porter, Courtney Lovelace, Vinnie Houser, Anton Jimenez, Bernadette Shaffer, Francis Jimenez, Alisha Riddervold, Jenna Nypan, Ephrem Shaffer, Peter Thorman and Joe Fink received letters.
National Forensic League certificates and new degrees of distinction also were presented.
Speech students and their coaches voted on the 2005 outstanding speech students and the 2006 season co-captains. Outstanding speech awards went to Northquest and Shaffer. Co-captains for 2006 will be Heldman and Porter.
