Mexico next topic at CLC Cultural Thursday

Student Courtney Butcher will present a free Cultural Thursday program on Mexico at noon Thursday in the Chalberg Theatre on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College.

Butcher has traveled twice to Mexico, in January and February to the Pacific coast, the interior highlands and in the region of Chiapas.

She was a participant with Vermont-based Volunteers for Peace, an international organization dedicated to intercultural education and community service.

VFP programs foster international education, voluntary service and friendship. In the last 23 years the organization has exchanged more than 23,000 volunteers in international work camps worldwide.

Each year more than 100 VFP work camps are operated in Mexico alone.

I was there to take part in three weeklong volunteer work camps, she said. In one of those camps we worked to protect endangered sea turtles. In another we were there to help with an environmental conservation project.

This is the final Cultural Thursday of the academic year. It is a 50-minute program designed to coordinate with students' schedules and allow working guests from outside CLC enjoy an educational lunch hour.

For more information contact Jan Kurtz at CLC, who coordinates the college's Resource Center for Cultures and Languages of the Americas, at 855-8183.
