Baxter man arrested for jewelry store burglary
Solid police work and a good surveillance system are being credited in the apprehension of a 20-year-old Baxter man believed to have burglarized Carlson Jewelers and Cold Stone Creamery on Edgewood Drive in Baxter early Friday morning.

Baxter Police Chief Jim Exsted said Baxter police officers arrested the man Friday afternoon at his residence on Forest Drive. Exsted said Baxter police received a burglary alarm call at Carlson Jewelers in the Grizzly Center around 2:26 a.m. Friday. A Baxter and Brainerd police officer responded to the call. While the building appeared secure, Exsted said both officers noticed someone had entered the building.

Then Baxter police, aided by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department and Brainerd police, conducted a search and discovered a burglar had gained entry through the roof of the building and had broken into Cold Stone Creamery as well. Exsted said it is believed nothing was stolen from Cold Stone Creamery but there was a felony amount of jewelry stolen from Carlson Jewelers. The exact amount has yet to be determined, he said.

Exsted said police officers recognized the suspect on the surveillance video and a search warrant was obtained for his residence. Stolen property from Carlson Jewelers was found at the suspect's residence.

We don't know exactly all that was taken at this time but we feel we've recovered a significant amount of it, if not all of it, said Exsted. It's definitely a felony amount, which we believe it to be well over $1,000.

The suspect was arrested and is now in the Crow Wing County Jail pending formal charges.

Exsted said the surveillance system in the new building played a factor in the quick arrest, as did the solid police work done by his officers.
