LOCAL BRIEFS Grants, training available to nonprofits fighting poverty
Central Minnesota faith-based and community-based organizations can strengthen their internal operations in the fight against poverty and other critical issues, thanks to $75,000 in grants and training available through a new partnership between the Initiative Foundation and the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.
Organizations that serve low-income people and/or meet vital needs are eligible for grants up to $10,000 and related training on several nonprofit management topics. Awards will be announced in August. For more detailed information go online to, www.ifound.org.
For more information about this program and to obtain application information, organization leaders are encouraged to attend one of two identical, informational sessions scheduled from 1:30 to 4 p.m. or 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 8 at The Kelly Inn in St. Cloud. The project is funded by the Compassion Capital Fund of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Other partners include Fairview Health Services and Minnesota Council of Churches.
Good Samaritan Bowl V set
Good Samaritan Bowl V is scheduled to begin at noon Monday at Jack's House in Brainerd and Community Bowl in Pine River.
The event is a bowling fundraiser that benefits the Good Samaritan Centers in Brainerd and Pine River and its hospice programs.
There will be a silent auction at the bowling event. Auction items are currently on display at the Good Samaritan Centers and at certain businesses sponsoring the event. The items will be displayed at the bowling alleys for additional bids at Jack's House and Community Bowl. People don't need to be present to win.
Proceeds for the event can be made in several ways at the event Monday, including dining at Jack's House or the Community Bowl, shop at the bake sale at Jack's House, bid on items at the silent auction from 12-8 p.m. at Jack's House, purchase raffle tickets, sponsor a bowler or give an in-kind donation. There also will be a phone-a-pledge line open from 3-8 p.m. Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at 825-2505 where people can pledge money for support.

Senior dance scheduled
Senior dances will be 1-4 p.m. Friday at the Deerwood Legion with music by John and Virginia.
United Way gains federal funds for emergency food, shelter
The United Way of Crow Wing County was awarded federal funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
The United Way was chosen to receive $26,386 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. An area board will determine how the funds awarded to United Way are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by area service agencies in the area.
The National Board grant terms list area agencies picked to receive funds must: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs. And, if the group is a private voluntary organization, it must have a voluntary board.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter program funds must contact Heidi Funk at the United Way office at 829-2619.
April 28-May 4 declared Pink and Blue Week
Brainerd Mayor James Wallin declared the week of April 28-May 4 Pink and Blue Week in recognition of the March of Dimes work on prevention of premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.
Airport commission to meet May 6
The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. on May 6 in the airport conference room.
