LOCAL BRIEFS
Deputies mobilize for seat belt enforcement
LITTLE FALLS - Morrison County sheriff's deputies will conduct added patrols through June 3 during a statewide Safe and Sober "click-it or ticket" seat belt enforcement sweep.

About 400 agencies statewide will participate in the nationwide campaign that leads into the summer driving season. A seat belt citation can cost as much as $115 with court and administrative fees.

"Step one to preventing injury or death in a traffic crash is to buckle-up, every seat, every ride," said Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel. "Unbelted motorists put their life and the lives of their passengers in jeopardy."

About 83 percent of Minnesotans use seat belts, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Of the 2,429 vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2001 through 2005, about 60 percent were not wearing seat belts. In the last five years in Morrison County, 42 people died in motor vehicle crashes and 25 of them were unbelted.

Service repair day for military families set

The Central Lakes College Veterans Resource Center family program and marine and small engine program have scheduled Small Engine Service/Repair Day for military family members from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the Brainerd campus

Paul Hofmann, instructor, and CLC marine and small engine students have volunteered to help families with spring service/repair in the marine and small engine room (W108) at no cost.

They will work on push/riding lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed whips, tillers, snowblowers and chain saws that need to be maintained, serviced or tuned.

Airport project wins award

The Federal Aviation Administration recently recognized the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport project, completed by the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission, with a FAA/Governor's Award. The award recognizes excellence in airport planning, development, operation and maintenance as well as promoting the spirit of aviation within the community.

The commission, assisted by professional consulting services firm Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc., completed the new 6,500-foot commercial service runway, expandable to 7,100 feet, within tight physical restraints and created a small environmental footprint. The impacts on the 400-acre site were limited to four acres of wetland and the relocation of a snowmobile and cross-country ski trail.

The project, including the new runway and a full parallel taxiway, opened to traffic on July 10.

Annual fundraiser draws nearly $20,000

BAXTER - More than 60 local business owners and community leaders helped raise almost $20,000 at the annual Brainerd/Baxter Area Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-up recently at the Arboretum Botanical Garden in Baxter.

The Northland Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association serves more than 400 families, providing patients with clinic visits, wheelchair assistance, braces, support groups and a summer camp program, all of which are provided at no cost to the families and funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
