Driving refresher course for 55+ offered
LOCAL BRIEFS
The Minnesota Highway Safety Center will offer the four hour refresher 55+ Driver Improvement Course at these times and locations:

From 8 a.m. - noon May 16 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa; from 4-8 p.m. May 20 at Pequot Lakes High School; from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. May 16 at Sacred Heart Church; and from 6-10 p.m. May 27 at Staples Motley High School.

The Driver Improvement course is open to the public. Pre-registration is requested. A Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center certified instructor will teach the class. .

The fee for the four hour refresher course is $18 and the eight hour course is $20. For more information, or to register, call toll free 1-(888)-234-1294.

People age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10 percent discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete two four-hour sessions. Those repeating are required to take a four-hour refresher course.

Summer hours announced for AARP tax aides

To accommodate the large number of seniors who have yet to file for the tax stimulus payment, AARP tax aides will be available to help from 9 a.m. - noon May 15, June 16, July 14, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11.

The service will be provided at the Brainerd Lakes Area Senior Activity Center.

To file for the tax stimulus rebate, take your 2007 Social Security 1099SSA, 1099-Rs, 1099INT, 1099-DIVs, W-2s and 2008 property tax statement to the aides. AARP volunteers will complete both of these refunds. If you have not filed for the 2007 Property Tax refund take that along with the 2006 income statements listed above and they can file that too.

Little Falls High School wins award

LITTLE FALLS - Little Falls High School advanced to the National Economics Challenge finals for the first time after winning the Heartland Multi-State Regional Economics Challenge on Thursday.

Little Falls defeated a team from Indiana in the final round in the David Ricardo Division and will compete in New York City May 17-19. Teams will compete from Pennsylvania, Hawaii and California.

Members of the winning Little Falls High School team are Caitlin Opatz, Heather Igoe, Kendra Hilmerson, and Kjersten Odendahl. The coach is Tom Stockard.
