BHS hall of fame to induct Arnold, Lind
Leaders in the tourism industry and the U.S. Navy will be inducted into the Brainerd High School Distinguished Achievement Hall of Fame this month.
Honored will be the late Wallace Lind, a Naval hero and member of the class of 1905, and John Arnold, a member of the class of 1937 and the co-owner of one of the biggest resorts in Minnesota who died earlier this year.
The hall of fame reception and dinner will be Sunday, May 18, at 5 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Family members of both BHS graduates are expected to make remarks.
Those inducted this year also will be recognized at the annual Senior Recognition Night program on Monday, May 19, in the high school gym.
Information from family members and Wikipedia indicates Wallace Ludwig Lind was born June 18, 1887, in Brainerd. He died April 12, 1940. He graduated from BHS in 1905 and entered the U.S. Naval Academy the same year. He was commissioned an ensign in 1911.
Lind was an engineering officer and executive officer aboard the troop transport President Lincoln in World War I when it came under a torpedo attack. Lind received the Navy Cross for heroism after that incident.
He served in command on several other ships before winding up his military career as a captain in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington.
In 1944, a destroyer was named in his honor. And the U.S.S. Wallace L. Lind served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War before being given to the South Korean navy in 1972 before being scrapped in 1994.
John Arnold, who died on Jan. 27, was co-owner of Madden's Resort on Gull Lake. After graduating from BHS he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 and served as a Marine captain in the Pacific in World War II. After his military service he spent 10 years as director of food service for Northwest Airlines.
He returned to his hometown of Brainerd in 1957 and became co-owner of Madden's with James and Jack Madden. The three men helped to redefine the Brainerd lakes area vacation business.
The Distinguished Achievement Hall of Fame is sponsored by Brainerd High School, the Brainerd Public School Foundation, Brainerd Rotary Club and the Brainerd Dispatch.
Plaques honoring the recipients are on display in two places at the high school. The most recent inductees' plaques are on display in the front entrance of the school. Plaques detailing the achievements of those inducted earlier are on a wall near the high school cafeteria.
Members of the selection committee are Jim Hunt, chairman, Jerry Walseth, Terry McCollough, Ruth Gmeinder, Howard "Jiggs" Blanck, Don Ryan, Arnold "Casey" Stengel, Steve Razidlo, Dave Johnson, Roy Miller, Kevin Thesing, Karen Owen, Erich Heise, Don O'Brien and Nicole Harmer.
Tickets for the Sunday night reception and dinner cost $10 each and may be purchased at the superintendent's office in the Washington Educational Services Building.
Community members are encouraged to nominate BHS graduates for the hall of fame. Information about deserving alums should be sent to the superintendent's office.
Those who have been graduates for seven years and have made distinguished achievements after leaving BHS are eligible for nomination for the hall of fame.
