Although dry weather shriveled this month's contest, the Brainerd Garden Club is about to begin presenting its Yard of the Month Club awards. The club is continuing a tradition started in 1972.
30 years ago (1978)
Mrs. Elsie Hedy, manager of Montgomery Ward's catalog department in Brainerd, will be retiring in May after 27 years of service. Their sale is dedicated to Elsie.
40 years ago (1968)
Rocky Gosse and Sue Koering were the first-place winners in Saturday's Jaycee sponsored Road-E-O contest. They will now advance to state competition on June 8. They are both students at Washington High School.
60 years ago (1948)
George Drake last night rolled 556 to become the city champion bowler for 1948. Len Peterson rolled 546 to cop second place honors.
80 years ago (1928)
Woolworth Co. expects to enter the Iron Exchange Building store site within a few weeks. Improvements to the building are rapidly taking form. The building is owned by Gould-Gray Co.
100 years ago (1908)
There will be a class of 20 graduated from the Brainerd High School on June 1. The exercises will be held in the opera house. There are only three boys in the class. Colors are gold and pale blue.
