Nisswa Area Historical Society to meet
The Nisswa Area Historical Society will have its first meeting of the 2006 season at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nisswa Community Center. An open house at the history center will follow.

About 200 participate in MS Walk Sunday in Brainerd

Nearly 200 people participated in the 19th annual MS Walk Sunday in Brainerd.

The Minnesota chapter of the National MS Society anticipates participants raised more than $1.7 million statewide to help fight multiple sclerosis.

American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event set

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Brainerd is scheduled for July 28 at Brainerd High School's Adamson Field.

A survivor's reception will kick off the event at 5:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. with the introduction of participating teams, followed by survivors, who will complete the first lap.

The overnight event is one of the major fund-raisers each year for the American Cancer Society. This year's relay will again include a silent auction with various items and assorted theme baskets up for bid. Activities and games are planned throughout the night for participants and guests.

Relay For Life teams are made up of eight to 15 members who hold various fund-raisers and collect donations in the weeks leading up to, and the night of, the event.

Koering bill allows 'electric' meetings for Veterans Homes Board

ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Senate last week unanimously passed legislation relaxing current regulations on the Veterans Homes Board.

The bill authored by Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, at the request of area veterans, allows the board to conduct certain meetings by telephone or other electronic means. It passed unanimously in the Senate and was passed in the House last month.

Allowing the board to meet via telephone or other electronic means will allow greater efficiency and save costs, Koering said in a statement.

House OKs Cass County hospital legislation authored by Howes

ST. PAUL - The Minnesota House recently voted for legislation to provide an exception to the state's hospital construction moratorium for a facility in Cass County.

The bill requests the construction of a hospital with up to 25 beds in Cass County within a 25-mile radius of the state's Ah-Gwah-Ching Center, provided the hospital's license holder is approved by the Cass County Board.

The Benedictine Health System of Duluth has proposed constructing a hospital in Walker and that request is being considered by the Minnesota Department of Health, Howes said in a news release.

The Minnesota Senate hasn't voted on the issue yet.

Blaine introduces bill helping Guard members keep licenses

ST. PAUL - Legislation protecting Minnesota National Guard members from losing their professional licenses was recently introduced in the Minnesota House by Rep. Greg Blaine, R-Little Falls. It's included in the House's state government finance package.

The bill clarifies and updates archaic language in a statute that protects occupational certification or licensure of military personnel and essential workers who enter into active service during time of war or national emergency.

Blaine said in a news release that bill places a hold on the license's time frame until the Guard member returns from active duty.

League of Women voters to receive award

The League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area will be one of two local League organizations in the state to receive the 2006 Spirit of Democracy Champion Award. This award is given to local League of Women Voter chapters by the League of Women Voters Minnesota.

This is the third year in a row the Brainerd group has received this award. The League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area exemplified the performance of top-rated Leagues in the state by promoting voter awareness and education as well as leadership for lakes area residents, the organization said in a news release.
