The 56-year old Washington Street bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Brainerd is scheduled to show off its new facelift Friday, as the $1.9 million renovation project draws to a close with the opening of the bridge.

Bill Musselman, head basketball coach at the University of Minnesota is the featured speaker at the Brainerd All-Sports Banquet sponsored by the Brainerd Quarterbacks Club. Seventeen sports will be honored.

A new city ordinance which received its first reading at the last regular city council meeting is designed to help keep Brainerd streets, alleys and lots clean all 12 months of the year.
60 years ago (1945)
Resorts in the Brainerd area are getting ready to entertain thousands of fisherman from all over the state starting Tuesday, the opening of fishing season. Several hundred boats have been coming through Brainerd this past week.
80 years ago (1925)
The first dance of the season at Lum Park Pavilion will be given by the Brainerd Elks Lodge on Monday, May 18. The Hedstrom Orchestra will play and is about to launch its new repertoire of the latest toe-tickling dance music.
