Ward amendment would repeal tax-exempt status on seasonal property
An amendment authored by Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, to repeal the tax-exempt status for seasonal property for school operating levies made it into the House omnibus tax bill.
While his amendment failed to get enough support on the House floor last week it was added to the bill by conferees over the weekend. No vote was taken on the omnibus tax bill Tuesday and the House and Senate were not in session Wednesday.
Ward said in a statement that area school districts need every dollar they can get. The change in the seasonal-recreational tax status would take place in 2010.
"Our district has one of the largest number of seasonal properties in the state; this provision will bring significant funding into our schools by bringing those seasonal property owners into our tax base."
The House omnibus tax bill also contains a homestead credit state refund that links property taxes to an owner's ability to pay.
Spring plant sale planned
The Lakes and Woods spring plant sale will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday under the water tower at the Jaques Art Center, a few blocks west of Highway 210 in Aitkin from the intersection of Highways 169 and 210.
A large selection of perennials, including hostas, flowers and vegetable annuals and geraniums will be available. Lakes and Woods Garden Club members will be present to answer questions.
