LHS Foundation distributes
nearly 650 free bicycle helmets
STAPLES - The Lakewood Health System Foundation recently distributed 634 bicycle helmets to area children through its annual "Helmets Worth Wearing" program.
Bicyclists of all ages are encouraged to wear a helmet during wheeled activities like riding bike, rollerblading, skateboarding or riding a scooter. In addition to a free helmet, children received tips for safe riding and were properly fitted for their appropriate size. Helmet distribution locations included Staples, Motley, Pillager, Eagle Bend, Browerville and Verndale.
Daymeon and McKayla Pearson, at the Verndale Fire Hall, took part in the Lakewood Health System Foundation's annual program "Helmets Worth Wearing." The foundation distributed 634 bicycle helmets.
Volunteers and police officers assisted in explaining to children that when worn properly, bicycle helmets are effective in protecting against head injury. A demonstration at the Staples location during Helmets Worth Wearing included strapping a watermelon into a helmet and dropping it on the sidewalk. The watermelon didn't crack with the helmet, but broke into many pieces without one.
"We try to stress the importance of wearing a helmet to the children in our communities," said Connie Etzler, foundation director. "Showing the effectiveness of a helmet is a great way to create a resounding message."
Other bicycle safety tips such as obeying road signs, using hand signals, watching for road hazards, using caution in wet weather were emphasized.
