Area events to honor military men, women MEMORIAL DAY
Military men and women will be honored in the lakes area this holiday weekend with a variety of Memorial Day services.
Brainerd
Brainerd's Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Laurel Street bridge. A wreath will be tossed into the Mississippi River in memory of those veterans lost at sea. A prayer will be given by Pastor Harvey Peterson, the firing of a rifle salute by the VFW for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and taps being played by Archie Katchie.
After a short march to the All Veterans Memorial next to the Crow Wing County Courthouse, a wreath will be placed in honor of all U.S. veterans of the armed forces followed by a prayer from Peterson and taps by Katchie.
What's open and closed on Memorial Day
Post offices will be closed Monday. There will not be mail delivery.
Banks will be closed.
Grocery stores will be open regular business hours.
Convenience stores will be open regular business hours.
Retail stores will be open Monday.
Government offices, including Brainerd city offices, Baxter city offices and county offices, will be closed Monday.
The Brainerd Public Library will be closed Monday.
The Brainerd Dispatch business office will be closed Monday but newspapers will be delivered Monday and Tuesday.

In honor of veterans of the Bataan Death March, a brief ceremony will be conducted at the Bataan Memorial, next to the National Guard Armory on Wright Street, with the placing of a wreath by veterans of the Bataan Death March and a prayer by Peterson.
The Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m., starting with the staging on First Avenue Northeast, proceeding east on B Street to Third Avenue Northeast and then north to Evergreen Cemetery where the ceremony will be conducted. (In the event of adverse weather, the parade will be canceled and the alternate site for the ceremonies will be the Franklin Arts Center auditorium).
Prelude music will be by the Brainerd High School Band under the direction of Rich Berggren.
Master of ceremonies will be Dick Lyscio. Peterson will give the invocation.
Raising of the American flag with "Salute to the Colors" will be presented by the Brainerd High School Band.
Leading the Pledge of Allegiance will be Evan Impola, Brainerd High School honor student. Colors will be posted by the VFW for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and placing of memorial wreaths will be done by representatives of auxiliary units of veterans organizations such as the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps, Blue Star Mothers and Daughters of American Revolution.
Greetings will be by Baxter Mayor Darrel Olson, Brainerd Mayor James Wallin, Crow Wing County Board member Rosemary Franzen and John Boeder, of Evergreen Cemetery Association.
Katelyn Thesing will deliver the Gettysburg Address.
Bill Wroolie, past national commander of Military Order of Purple Heart and department commander of the DAV, will give the Memorial Day address.
A selection will be performed by the Brainerd High School Band.
Benediction will be given by Peterson.
Retiring of the colors will be performed by area veterans organizations.
Taps, with echo, will be done by the Brainerd High School Band buglers.
Because of the parade route, do not park on Third Avenue Northeast.
Backus
Ret. Army Maj. Gen. George J. Steiner of Anoka will give Memorial Day addresses at Backus and Ponto Lake cemeteries conducted by the Backus American Legion and Auxiliary.
The tribute to deceased veterans who served their country will include a color guard rifle salute, laying of a memorial poppy wreath and taps played by students from the Pine River-Backus School District. Backus services will begin at 10 a.m. and the Ponto Lake service will follow the conclusion of the Backus memorial at about 11 a.m., both on Monday.
Steiner, who retired from the Army in 1997, is a graduate of the Air Ground Operations School, the Command and General Staff College and the Fort McCoy Air Assault Course. He holds a bachelor's degree in social science from St. John's University and a master's degree in social work from St. Louis University.
His assignments included commanding the 1st battalion, 409th Infantry, 205th Infantry Brigade; Headquarters, 6th Infantry Division; the 88th Army Reserve Command and its successor, the 88th Regional Support Command at Fort Snelling which encompasses six states and 25,500 reservists. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Crosslake
The Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake.
Crosslake Lutheran Church will host a community observance of Memorial Day at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Outdoor Worship Center on Daggett Pine Road, across from the Crosslake Community Center.
Ret. Gen. John. W. Vessey and Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Norris Einertson will speak.
Vessey has 46 years of military service, which ended in 1985 in his second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Reagan appointed him to that post in 1982. He and his wife live in Crow Wing County.
Einertson retired from the Army as a chaplain in 1990 after more than 29 years of active duty service. He and his wife live in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he serves as an interim pastor.
Jenkins-Pequot Lakes
The Jenkins VFW Post No. 3839 and Pequot Lakes American Legion Post No. 49 will host a service at 10 a.m. Monday at Pequot Lakes High School.
After the service, participants will march to the Pequot Lakes cemetery for a military ceremony and then to Sibley Park for a naval ceremony.
Little Falls
A Memorial Day service at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Bill Ryan of Paynesville will be the speaker. Instrumental and vocal music will be performed. Bring a lawn chair for seating.
The Korean War Memorial will be dedicated during this service.
Nisswa
Citizens of Nisswa will come together in a commemoration ceremony to honor a special class of heroes.
"We must not forget all those who gave their lives for this great country," Post Commander Dick Knowles said.
The ceremony will take place at noon Monday at the Nisswa American Legion.
Speakers will include U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman and state Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley.
Jim Starkey of Post 627 will be the master of ceremonies.
The ceremony will begin by recognizing all families with members of their family currently serving in the military.
There will be a number of different events during the ceremony, including a military fly-by of the 148th Fighter Wing out of Duluth.
"The ceremony will not only honor those who have died, but also those who live and continue to fight for the freedom of this great nation," Knowles said.
Singers from Grace United Methodist church will perform.
The daughters of Scott Thurlow, an active member of Post 627 who died last year, will throw a wreath into Nisswa Lake in honor of all who died at sea. Father Zeck will be chaplain. Nisswa Mayor Brian Lehman will introduce U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman.
Pillager
Memorial Day services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pillager School.
Pine River-Timothy Township
The Pine River American Legion will conduct its service at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Pine River Dam. Hank McKinney, retired naval officer, will speak. The service will continue at the Pine River Cemetery. There will be a service at 11:15 a.m. at the Swanburg Cemetery on Cass County Road 1 in Timothy Township. A luncheon will be served at the Legion Post No. 613.
