Longtime auxiliary volunteer honored
Betty Aga, a St. Joseph's Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer since 1967, was presented with an award at the 2005 annual meeting and recognition brunch. She is the organization's longest active volunteer.

The meeting marked the auxiliary's 50th year of serving the hospital. The brunch was conducted at St. Joseph's Medical Center's cafeteria.

Scheduled speakers included Tom Prusak, hospital president, and Sara Dunlap.









The auxiliary board of directors for 2005-2006 includes Brenda Johnson, president; Shirley Heldecker, secretary; Pam Knutson, past president; Karel House, gift shop representative; Shirlee Shanks, bookkeeper; Charlene Sipper, president-elect; Ann Richardson, treasurer; Gretchen Sorden, legislature representative; Carolyn Ferrian, newsletter; and Sandy Cich, historian.

GOP lawmakers air views of session

Four Republican members of the Minnesota House aired their views on the recently completed regular session of the Legislature during a news conference Wednesday in Brainerd.

The lawmakers were Rep. Paul Gazelka, R-Brainerd; Rep. Greg Blaine, R-Little Falls; Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Delano; and Rep. Joe Hoppe, R-Chaska.

The representatives praised Pawlenty's attempt to try to reach accord by proposing a cigarette fee and said it's now up to Senate Democrats to spell out their plans for the remaining budget bills which were not passed in the regular session.

Kiffmeyer to lead singing in Little Falls ceremony Sunday at cemetery

LITTLE FALLS -- Minnesota Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer will sing the "Armed Forces Medley" Sunday while a wreath placement is conducted at a memorial program at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

A band concert begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and the program begins at 1:55 p.m.

Nisswa turtle races set to begin

NISSWA -- Nisswa turtle races will be 2 p.m. Wednesdays, June 8-Aug. 17, in the parking lot next to the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce building in downtown Nisswa.

Turtle races have been a tradition in Nisswa for the past 40 years. Russ Hale, president of the Nisswa chamber; Nisswa Mayor Harold Kraus; Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley; Miss Nisswa Alexandra Meyer and Little Miss Nisswa Samantha Meier will attend the first race to kick off the season. Race announcer will be Biff Ulm, owner of The Painted Turtle shop and Wedgewood Photography in downtown Nisswa. Shannon Webster of Ye' Ole Pickle Factory also will announce turtle races during the season.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. and races start at 2 p.m.

Groundbreaking ceremony for wind turbine is rescheduled

LITTLE FALLS -- A groundbreaking ceremony for a wind turbine was rescheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Morrison County Fairgrounds. The event, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was rained out.

The turbine, with a 31-foot rotor on a 21-foot tower, will produce electricity for the agricultural society at the county fairgrounds.

The Water Foundation helped the Morrison County Agricultural Society secure a $20,000 Minnesota Power grant for the turbine. A tower tip-up ceremony is scheduled July 20. Public education tours on wind power will be conducted during the Windy River Fair, a sustainable agriculture and renewable energy fair that's planned in conjunction with the Morrison County Fair, which is July 27-30.
