Beginning June 2, Crow Wing County will offer greater public access to records via its Web site with online maps of property parcels in the county.
Crow Wing County Auditor Deborah Erickson said the county is catching up in terms of technology with its neighbors as Aitkin and Cass counties already provide the information online.
The GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping Web site is a combination of computer hardware, software and geographic information. Databases from several sources are combined and displayed in a common map.
"The result: users can 'see' data in an integrated visual format," the county land services department stated in a written report to the board Tuesday. "Crow Wing County employees and area cities have been using the product for the last several months and it has been a great success. The system provides an invaluable resource for employees in almost every department in the county.
"The new public Web site will enable citizens to search and view public data on property parcels within the county. Visitors can access, display and interact with GIS data through their Web browser. The user can locate property by searching on a particular property address, property identification number or by zooming in to an area of interest."
With the information, the public will be able to find boat ramp locations on area lakes, trails and parks in the county, property boundaries, property tax information, voting precincts, polling locations, school districts and commissioner districts relevant to particular properties, the county reported.
More information is expected to be added in the future. The county also will offer a subscription service, with prices ranging from $10 to $50 a month, for more detailed information.
The Web site is available at www.co.crow-wing.mn.us/gis/index.html (select the link for GIS maps). According to the county, people will be asked to read a waiver and agree to the county's terms and then a map will be available to view.
