BRANDON - Brittany Kern went 2-for-3, scored two runs and stole three bases to lead the Verndale Pirates to the Section 6-1A softball championship Thursday as they defeated Hawley 5-4.
It was Verndale's first section softball championship. The Pirates will play the Section 7-1A champion, Mesabi East or Littlefork-Big Falls, in the Class 1-A state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. June 5 at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
Verndale's Nicole Bart pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Bart was 2-4 and Cathy Kempe went 2-3 for the Pirates.
