Fishing event helps to build Confidence
The boy reeled in - as fast as a boy his age could.

And, mere seconds later, he stood face-to-face with the catch - a small sunfish.

With the help of an adult mentor, he released it back into the lake. You could sense the confidence build as he cast his line back into the water.

Alex Sample of Pillager is a healthy, 7-year-old boy who, it appears, loves to fish. Others aren't as fortunate as Alex and many of the other kids who fished that day during a DNR kids' fishing event. But, thanks to the Confidence Learning Center, dreams of fishing and outdoor adventure for those with developmental disabilities are, well, a cast away.

Thanks, in part, to the center's annual fishing outing.

Camp Confidence's 25th annual Fishing Classic is scheduled Saturday, June 14 at Cragun's Resort and Gull Lake. The Fishing Classic, along with the Golf Classic, scheduled the previous day at the Legacy Courses at Cragun's, are the center's largest fundraisers, with all proceeds supporting the programs at Confidence Learning Center, whose mission is to provide year-round outdoor recreation and education to persons of all ages with developmental disabilities.

Entry fee is $175 per person or $350 for a team of three. Registration includes the Mariucci Fiesta the previous evening, six hours of guided fishing on Gull Lake on June 14, a box lunch, fishing shirt, fishing hat, soft-sided cooler filled with fishing goodies, awards presentation with numerous door prizes and a shore dinner.

"We're up to 62 boats and have room for 90," Cathe Picek, special events director at Confidence Learning Center, said Thursday afternoon. "All (participants) have to bring is themselves - and a rainsuit, depending on the weather. The guides provide everything."

Among the guides, who will be paired with two amateurs per boat, will be Marv Koep, Ray Gildow, Dan "Walleyedan" Eigen and Perry Good as well as members of Team Crestliner, Team Lund, Team Skeeter and Team YarCraft. Local and national fishing icon Al Lindner will serve as a co-emcee.

Prizes will be awarded in each of the four divisions - walleye, bass, northern pike and mixed bag.

Picek said the Fishing Classic could accommodate anglers as late as the morning of the event and to call or show up at Cragun's the morning of the Classic to check on possible openings.
