PURSES FOR GOOD PURPOSE
Staff Writer BREEZY POINT - Women and their purses.
A woman can never have enough purses and Saturday there were plenty of purses and plenty of women at the new Lakeview Ballroom at Breezy Point Resort for the first Purses for Partners fundraising event. The proceeds of the event, which consisted of a luncheon and a live and silent purse auction, benefited Kinship Partners in Brainerd.
Eighty-eight women had the chance to bid on 25 purses during the live auction. There also were another 40 purses on the silent auction and a few were given away as prizes or through raffle tickets, including a purse that Jennifer Lopez carried in her movie, "El Cantante," which came with a certificate of authenticity and the original prop tag.
Karen Owen of Brainerd won the purse.

"I'm so surprised I won this purse, I'm very excited," said Owen as she looked at her new purse. "I like JLO and this is such an unique item to win.
Owen, who's a Kinship Partners board member, said the purse auction is a great way to raise money because, "All women like purses."
And that proved to be the case Saturday, as the women bid for the purses they wanted. Bidding could be heavy or sparse, depending on the item.
The lowest purse that was bid on went for $35 and the most expensive was $180. Each purse contained a surprise gift from an area business.

Elise Mink, Kinship Partners marketing coordinator, said staff at Kinship thought Purses for Partners would be a good fundraiser because it'd be something new to the lakes area. Mink said the idea came from one of the Kinship supporters, who attended a purse auction in Indiana.
"The event really blossomed as the community, businesses and individuals stepped up and wanted to donate purses or gifts to Kinship," said Mink. "We're hoping to make this an annual event."
Jodi Malecha of Breezy Point attended the event with her daughter, Megan, 10, and her mother, Nancy Beckmann.

"This is our belated Mother's Day event," said Malecha. "We didn't do anything on Mother's Day because we saved it for today. It's fun."
Malecha battled with Jenny Lane of Pequot Lakes for a purse that was made out of Hershey bar wrappers. Lane outbid Malecha and snatched the purse.
Shannon Janco of Baxter didn't get all the purses she wanted. She bid on four and ended up with a Guess purse that was mocha in color with gold trim.
"I like purses," Janco said. "I have 20 at home. I don't need them, I want them. I need more to match my shoes."

Janco has a friend involved in Kinship Partners and she wanted to support the organization by coming to the purse event.
Sitting alongside Janco was Roxanne Soukup of Pequot Lakes, who won the bidding war on a chocolate brown leather purse. Soukup paid $70.
"My son has a Kinship Partner and I'm here to support the program," Soukup said.
