Monda ties for 22nd at state meet CLASS 3A STATE GOLF Sports Editor Tyler Monda finished one of the most successful individual seasons in the Brainerd Warrior boys' golf program as he tied for 22nd place in the Class 3A state tournament Wednesday.
At Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Monda followed his first-round 76 with a 77 in the second for a 153 total, 12 shots behind medalist Billy Barnhart of Park of Cottage Grove.
"The state tournament was awesome," Monda said. "I was happy to be able to play well in the state tournament. It was not as good as I feel I could have played, but it was not bad at the same time for my first state tournament. I will take that. I was happy with the scores I posted."
Monda, who will golf at the University of North Dakota next season, was medalist in five meets this season. He finished in the top three in every meet he played in except two.
"My senior year has been amazing," he said. "I played a lot of good golf. One thing I didn't want to do was have any scores in the 80s and I accomplished that. It gives me a good feeling to know I ended my senior year the way I did."
Warriors coach Brian Wallace said Monda played a solid final round. Monda opened the final round with seven straight pars.
"He was on a roll," Wallace said. "He finished the side with two bogeys and did miss a short putt on No. 9. Other than that he was real steady.
"He had a solid start. He couldn't get close enough to make some legitimate birdie shots, although he did make a birdie on No. 11. Still, he worked hard at it. He fought to the end. It just didn't work today like (Tuesday) toward the end.
"He kept in good spirits, he kept at it. Seventy-seven is a pretty nice score. He felt a little bit disappointed because he can play so much better, but looking at the big picture 76-77 is a good state tournament. He can look back and be pretty happy with it."
Monda said conditions were favorable for a low score. It was mostly sunny and warm in the Twin Cities.
"I got into a little bit of trouble here and there, but I hit the ball pretty well," he said. "I only made a couple putts. I should have made more than I did.
"Not getting putts to drop was tough. Not having birdies to equal out the bogeys makes it tough."
