Pillager's Caitlin Kavanaugh ended her first round in the Class 1A state girls' golf tournament with a par.
The senior is hoping that's a sign of better things to come as she struggled in her first state appearance with an opening-round 114 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
Kavanaugh shot nines of 57-57 to place her in a tie for 56th.
"The first couple of holes my drives were not going as far as I needed them to. I got really frustrated," she said.
"I can't say I was happy with anything. Toward the end my putting got better and my attitude changed. That made me more optimistic about Thursday."
Kavanaugh wasn't able to attend Tuesday's practice round, but didn't blame her lack of knowledge of the course on her score. She said the ball simply wasn't going where she wanted it to go.

Kavanaugh begins her second round off the 10th tee box at 7:39 a.m. Thursday. She said with much of the pressure off, she's hoping to end her high school career on a high note.
"I'm just going to have more fun," she said. "I was really nervous to start the round. Now that I've seen the course I'm not going to worry about it as much and have fun."
