HEWITT (AP) - Nineteen horses have been found dead on a farm in central Minnesota, and officials say some of them have been there for months.
The farm in Hewitt is owned by a man in his 60s. Authorities say Todd County sheriff's deputies learned of the problem when they saw horses wandering on a road. When they went to the farm, they found horse bones and carcasses scattered everywhere.
Authorities also found nine horses still alive, but starving. They were placed at a farm run by a woman who cares for neglected horses.
An investigator with the Animal Humane Society says the man who owns the horses just couldn't care for them anymore. So far, the man has not been charged, but he has been in jail for the last month on an unrelated charge.
Hewitt is about 40 miles west of Brainerd.
