Mill Avenue project ahead of schedule
Construction may be over by Labor Day
The Mill Avenue project may be completed by Labor Day, which is about a month-and-a-half ahead of schedule.

Crow Wing County Highway Engineer Lyndon Robjent gave the county board an update on the construction progress Tuesday.

With the Mississippi River bridge now open, detours around ongoing Mill Avenue construction work are now localized on northeast Brainerd side streets. That means the large detour using Wise Road, Beaver Dam and Riverside Drive is no longer necessary, which is good news for the busy Fourth Street Northwest and Washington Street intersection.

Now that traffic is crossing the bridge, motorists driving south may use N Street to 13th Avenue Northeast, then take H Street to First Avenue Northeast to Gillis Avenue and finally back to Washington Street. Motorists traveling north will simply reverse that order. Detoured traffic may also take 13th Avenue Northeast, which is near Lum Park, directly off Highway 210, following it to N Street.

On Tuesday, Robjent said the county will continue to monitor traffic and speed through the residential area.

In other highway business, the board:

Amended the contract with Widseth Smith Nolting for services related to reconstruction of County Highway 4 from County Highway 18 to Lakeshore Drive by $59,559.50 for a total of $167,897.50. The county requested additional services for the project.

Awarded a contract for the project to realign Highway 18 in the Nisswa area to WSN for $30,750 for traffic analysis and concept layout engineering services. The realignment, which uses federal and state aid funds, is planned for fall 2011.

Awarded a $33,127.60 contract to Anderson Brothers for the construction of a right turn lane at County Highway 16 and County Highway 12 and a bypass lane at Highway 16 and Forest Knolls Road in the Jenkins area. Federal funds will pay for the entire project.

Awarded a $2,030,580.71 contract to Anderson Brothers for reconstruction of County Highway 2 from Koering Road to County Highway 45 in the St. Mathias area. The project is subject to approval by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The project, expected to begin in July, uses federal and county funds. Federal funds are capped at $978,000.
