Five anglers, 5 different fishing styles
Outdoors Columnist When I look at my guide service I see five individuals with five different ways of fishing.
When I find a school of fish I sit on it, not moving very much in the process. Tim Edinger covers more ground than I do and will move along a structure at a faster pace. Tim also really works his rod tip. Butch Blasing moves like Tim unless it's fall and he knows big walleyes are below; then he hovers. Tim Hanske's a mover, too, and a bit more adventurous than the rest of us. He's not afraid to experiment. Then there's Two-Crank Toby Kvalevog, who's a combination of all of us. Toby always fishes outside the box and is pretty successful in the process.
Everyone has his way of fishing and none of us has the right way every day. Fishing really keeps you on your toes. Sometimes it makes you scream. One thing we all have in common is that we know there are active fish somewhere on any given day. It's just a matter of finding that spot before the trip is over.
I'll admit I don't like to move fast. Sometimes my clients don't like that. Sorry, but that's the way I was taught to fish and most days it works. One thing I really take into consideration is the ability of my clients. Those that can feel a bite, set the hook and fight a fish can really make a guide look good.
Well, it's time to head off on another trip after a few hours of sleep and with a Chipotle burrito rolling around in my stomach. Can't wait to see what happens today!
