BIZ BUZZ
MaxBotix company expands to Baxter, offers ultrasonic sensors
MaxBotix Inc. opened in Baxter and expanded in leased space in the Baxter Industrial Park on College Road.

The business is owned by Robert and Nita Gross. MaxBotix Inc. designs, builds and markets equipment.

Robert Gross said the business sells ultrasonic range finders and has more than 80 distributors. The range finders sense the distance to objects. Gross said applications include a mount in a vending machine that determines whether a candy bar fell or not. It if doesn't fall, the vending machine gives the money back to the customer.

Sensors may be used to measure tank levels, snow, people and proximity.

Gross said the company's biggest market is with the hobby user and education market where college students build robots. The company also has an industrial sensor market with original equipment manufacturers and that growth is partly why the company needed to expand this year.

They've hired three people in last two months and are continuing to expand. Gross said they may have twice as many employees by year's end because of new products.

Trailblazer Bikes is moving from Washington Street in Baxter to Edgewood Drive by the Black Bear Lodge and Saloon.

Ascensus, provider of retirement products and solutions, recently began its migration into the newly remodeled space in the East Brainerd Mall.

Ascensus began moving to Brainerd from office space along Golf Course Drive in Baxter. Members of the company's IT department has moved into the new offices following a major remodeling effort by Nor-Son Inc. to transform the former J.C. Penney department store space into multilevel offices.

There is a broad main hallway on the main level, an abundance of natural light through an atrium (which was constructed for the project) and a winding open staircase leading to the second floor.

The office space was formerly occupied by J.C. Penney before the retail store moved to its new building off Glory Road in Baxter. Ascensus also has offices nearby in the former Pamida store across the intersection from the mall. The company expects to move in stages, to ensure customer service quality during the transition, and be fully moved by early summer of 2010.

Goals in the move included the creation of a single campus-like setting with more staff members in one building or at least in close proximity and providing a workspace that inspired productivity through its design.

The new Boys & Girls Club recently opened at 303 East Broadway in Little Falls. The club is open for children from kindergarten through age 18 with a focus on teenagers.
