Paine Santos gains Lakewood employee honor

STAPLES - Lakewood Health System, Staples, announced Katie Paine Santos, registered nurse, care coordinator for Memory Care as it's 2009 Team Member of the Year.

Throughout the year, Lakewood employees nominate coworkers for STAR awards, a monthly recognition program. Of the employees recognized for STAR awards, one Team Member of the Year is chosen by the Lakewood Health System Board.

Of the 36 STAR employees, Paine Santos was nominated for Team Member of the Year by two coworkers, CeCe Carlson, Care Center CRA and Cindy Gold, purchasing coordinator. Part of the nomination read, ...Her dedication, positive attitude and continued pursuit toward excellence are an inspiration for all ... Katie is always going way above and beyond, not only for her residents and their families, but for her staff as well.

Paine Santos was recognized at the 23rd annual Lakewood Health System Employee Recognition Banquet in May at T Maxwell's in Staples.

Paine Santos began working at Lakewood since 2004. Initially hired as an RN charge nurse, Paine Santos is now the care coordinator in Lakewood's Memory Care Unit and supervises 15 employees. Paine Santos has been working in nursing homes since she was 17.

Hinnenkamp joins RedHouseMedia

Brainerd advertising agency, RedHouseMedia, announced the addition of graphic designer Kellie Hinnenkamp to its creative staff.

A graduate of Northwestern College in St. Paul, Hinnenkamp's experience includes free-lance design as well as advertising for the culinary and private education industries. She is a native of Little Falls.

Helland joins North Central Medical Supply

Troy Helland, Verndale, joined North Central Medical Supply in Brainerd as a registered respiratory therapist.

Helland is a native of the Cooperstown, N.D., area and has lived and worked in Minnesota for the last 10 years. He has more then a dozen years experience working as a respiratory therapist, mostly in a hospital setting.

His background includes home medical equipment experience, most notable as director of clinical services for Rice Home Medical in the latter part of the 1990's. He has worked the last five years as a respiratory therapist at Lakewood Health System in Staples. He received his post-secondary education at both University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and at North Dakota State University School of Respiratory Medicine in Fargo, N.D.

Two therapists join Lakewood Health System

STAPLES - Lakewood Health System announces the addition of Miles Krueger, doctorate physical therapist and Janet Byland, occupational therapist to its rehabilitation department.

Both therapists began practicing at Lakewood in June.

Krueger comes to Lakewood Health System after graduating from the University of North Dakota, School of Medicine in May. Krueger has worked in a number of facilities during his clinical experience including St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth; CentraCare, St. Cloud; Unity Medical Center, Grafton, N.D.; and Select Therapy, Grand Forks, N.D. A member of the American Physical Therapy Association, Krueger joins six physical therapists currently practicing at Lakewood Health System.

Byland, a former rehabilitation services manager at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital and Home, joins Lakewood Health System with 14 years of occupational therapy experience. Her experience lies in long-term care, acute care, school and home based centers and outpatient facilities.

Her prior practice focused on all ages, but she has specific knowledge in pediatric development delays, orthopedic hand and arm injuries and cognitive/memory changes. Byland finished her bachelor's degree in occupational therapy at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul and is licensed and certified with the Minnesota Department of Health.

Steinmetz named LF employee of the month

LITTLE FALLS - Kim Steinmetz, Little Falls, was named Employee of the Month for July by the Chamber of Commerce in Little Falls.

Steinmetz is assistant manager at Fitness Connection. She's been employed there for 14 years. In her employer's comments, The Fitness Connection reported Steinmetz has been instrumental in helping the business grow, particularly in her input for planning a new facility.

WORKSHOPS

CLC hosts 'On Course' workshop

Central Lakes College, Brainerd, hosted a three-day professional development workshop, On Course, for 20 employees of CLC and eight from St. Cloud Technical College from June 22-24.

The group included instructors, administrators, advisers and support staff.

On Course provides an immersion in learning-centered education. The training represents best practices from innovators in higher education, business, psychology, sports and personal effectiveness. The goal is to help students become full and active partners in their own education.

Robin Middleton of On Course was the presenter. Betsy Picciano of CLC coordinated the workshop, assisted by Trudy Austin.

CLC President Larry Lundblad, Interim Vice President Suresh Tiwari, and Michael Amick, dean of Administration and Technology Services, welcomed the group and applauded the effort to improve both student academic success and retention.

Unemployment Insurance seminar planned in July in Staples

STAPLES - What are Minnesota employers' obligations with Minnesota Unemployment Insurance?

That is one of the questions to be addressed in a July 16 Business Services seminar in Staples with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The session is from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Central Lakes College Staples campus, Room C168, 1830 Airport Road. The session includes a continental breakfast.

Presenter is Gary Johnson, employer/agent liaison with the Unemployment Insurance program at DEED. Johnson will discuss a broad range of unemployment insurance topics and answer questions.

Topics include: new unemployment insurance legislation, eligibility requirements, follow-up after dismissing a problem worker, filing an appeal, common mistakes, partial unemployment insurance with the Minnesota Shared Work Program, temporary and permanent layoffs, online system, reports, fraud, covered and non-covered employment.

Registration deadline is July 10. Cost is $10.

Nisswa Women's Club hosts monthly meeting

NISSWA - The Nisswa Women's Club hosted its monthly membership meeting at June 18 at the Timbermist meeting and banquet facility.

The program topic, The Legacy that You (Leave) Live, was presented by Mike Mraz, son of club member Bev Siemens. Mraz is a Minneapolis-based trade show strategist.

Eunice Wiebolt, chair of the Vintage Bridal Tea & Fashion Show, announced that the event will be Aug. 13 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa.

Hostesses for the meeting were June Zuroski, Chair, Mary Gibson, Nancy Schwab, Lynn Ewing, and Joann Muehlbauer. The inspirational was given by Lois Jensen.

United Way recognizes CTC and Best Buy

Consolidated Telecommunications Co., Chief Executive Office Kevin Larson and employees have received a Pillar Award for more than $10,000 in contributions to the 2008-2009 United Way of Crow Wing & Southern Cass Counties' community campaign.

Best Buy of Baxter, managed by Brent Mackcow, received a Cornerstone Award for $5,000-$9,999 in contributions to the 2008-2009 United Way of Crow Wing & Southern Cass Counties' community campaign.

Grand Casino wins readers' choice awards

ONAMIA - Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley received a combined six awards in the 2009 Midwest Gaming & Travel Readers' Choice Awards survey of Native American casinos.

Both casinos were honored for having the best players club in Minnesota. Grand Casino Hinckley was also recognized for throwing the state's best players club parties, having the friendliest dealers, best casino hosts, and readers' favorite casual restaurant - Grand Grill Americana. Grand Casino Mille Lacs was also recognized for having readers' favorite fine dining restaurant - Woodlands Steakhouse.

We view these awards as major accomplishments that recognize our hard work and most importantly, our commitment to our guests, said Joe Nayquonabe, corporate vice president of marketing for the Mille Lacs Band's Corporate Commission, which operates the casinos. Rice receives Minnesota Rural Health Hero Award

STAPLES - Tim Rice, Lakewood Health System president, Staples, was recognized for his innovations and leadership in rural health care at the Minnesota Rural Health Conference on June 16 in Duluth.

Rice received the Minnesota Rural Health Hero award for his contributions in strengthening medical services in central Minnesota. Rice has led Lakewood Health System from one hospital and 200 employees to an independent, integrated system of five primary care clinics, senior services and 800 employees. According to the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services, Lakewood is also setting the national standard for the medical home model, which is to be part of the health reform effort at the state and national level.

Lakewood is reaching out to share its medical home experiences with other facilities. All 12 family practice physicians are involved in the medical home approach in which primary care providers, families and patients work in partnership to improve quality, value and outcomes for individuals with chronic health conditions. At Lakewood this extends to other programs such as palliative care and home care to create continuity and increased patient satisfaction.

Rice has been active in statewide and collaborative health care initiatives, including chairing the Minnesota Physician Hospital Relationship Forum and the Minnesota Independent Hospital Forum; serving as the District D President of the Minnesota Hospital Association, and on the MHA Education Committee. Rice also helped found Todd-Wadena Healthy Connections - a coalition of public and private health agencies.

Riverwood Healthcare, Komen affiliate recognized

Riverwood Healthcare Center and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Brainerd Lakes Affiliate were recognized as the Rural Health Team Award winners for their Breast Health Team, the Minnesota Department of Health reported.

Riverwood Healthcare Center launched a Nurse Navigator Program for Breast Health to serve residents of Aitkin and Crow Wing counties. The program educates women about the need for regular screenings for early detection of breast cancer and offers one-on-one support and coordination of services for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Brenda Jindra, Kelly Simons and Christina Woods of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Brainerd Lakes Affiliate were advocates of including Aitkin County in the area covered by the Brainerd Lake Komen organization and encouraged Riverwood to apply for a grant to establish the Nurse Navigator program. Liz Dean, Mike Delfs, Carolyn Hagen, Janet Larson, Katrina Pierson, Amy Renner, Judy Turner and Shelli Urness contribute to the success of the program, the MDH reported. Renner, a registered nurse, implemented the Nurse Navigator program at Riverwood.
