A tractor trailer caught on fire at 6:22 a.m. Friday on Highway 371 near the Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center south of Brainerd, shutting down traffic in the right northbound lane for six hours. According to Lt. Dave ZumBerge of the Minnesota State Patrol, the semi driver had struck a deer near Kimball and was flagged down by a motorist near the Welcome Center after the deer carcass, which had become lodged in the trailer's rear axle, caused the tractor-trailer to get hot and start on fire. The semi was fully loaded with produce, including watermelon. The trailer and its contents were destroyed in the fire but the truck wasn't damaged. The Brainerd Fire Department also responded.
