Elwell also will face child porn charge
Staff Writer Based on information found in computers seized from William Elwell's home, the former Brainerd School District social studies teacher faces a second charge, this time relating to pornography involving minors.
This past week in Crow Wing County District Court, a criminal complaint was filed against Elwell, 34, Baxter, accusing him of felony possession of pornographic work involving minors. Last month, he was charged with felony solicitation of a child to engage in sexual conduct.
Brainerd Police Investigator Chad Kleffman executed a search warrant on May 13 at Elwell's Baxter home, seizing two computers. The computers were turned over to the Baxter Police Department for examination.
On the hard drive of one computer, police found an image of a juvenile female lying nude on a bed along with 18 images of juveniles engaged in sexual acts and of juveniles posed nude in sexual positions, said the criminal complaint filed against Elwell.
The criminal complaint did not state how Elwell obtained the photos. Crow Wing County Don Ryan declined to comment outside of what the complaint stated.
In the May 14 charges, Elwell is accused of making sexual comments to a 16-year-old Rochester girl with whom he chatted with on the Internet. It was noted in that criminal complaint that several of the dates and times of the chats between Elwell and the girl matched up with times Elwell was at work at the Area Education Center.
Elwell, who taught in the Brainerd School District for three years, turned in a resignation letter. But instead of accepting it the school board terminated his contract.
Elwell was released on his own recognizance after the May 14 arraignment. He is scheduled to appear in court July 6 on the charge of felony solicitation of a child to engage in sexual conduct. He is scheduled to appear July 16 on the charge of felony possession of pornographic work involving minors.
