LOCAL BRIEFS Brainerd High School junior's team wins state rodeo championship
HUGO - Luke Schubert of rural Brainerd and his partner, Shelby Ling of Windom, recently earned the titles of state champions and No. 1 qualifier to the 61st annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.M.
They won the titles June 19-21 at the Minnesota State High School Rodeo Association finals in Hugo, competing in the team roping event. They each received a championship buckle and a hand-tooled, custom championship saddle.
At the national finals, Schubert and Ling will compete against rodeo athletes from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. The national finals run from July 19-25, with approximately 1,300 rodeo athletes competing in 12 events.
Schubert also competed in the steer wrestling and calf roping events. He finished fifth in steer wrestling, seventh in calf roping and fourth as all-around cowboy.
Team roping is used on cattle ranches to doctor an animal. One roper catches the animal by the back legs and the other catches the animal by the horns or head.
Crosslake's Native Americans the topic at community center
CROSSLAKE - Ray Nelson and Jon Schram, area historians and students of Native American artifacts, will examine the lives of the Crosslake area's earliest residents from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 8 at the Crosslake Community Center.
"Layers of Time: Glimpses of Crosslake's Native Peoples" will include information about tribal life and conflicts, contacts with white explorers, the fur trade and area burial sites. The presenters also will explain artifacts from this era, many of them collected from the shores of the Whitefish Chain.
There is no fee for the program.
Unlimited Learning on jazz
CROSBY - Jim Curran, jazz enthusiast and collector, will explore the contributions of outstanding women performers and singers who fronted and sometimes led their own big bands.
Special emphasis will be placed on Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day. The class, sponsored by Unlimited Learning, is scheduled from 1:30-3:30 p.m. July 14 at the Heartwood Conference Center in Crosby.
Curran has amassed a considerable collection of records, CDs, DVDs and movies on the early years of jazz and swing, from the '20s to the early '50s. He will provide handouts and CD compilations related to the presentation.
As a follow-up to the program, attendees may sign up for a trip to the Guthrie Theater to see "Ella!," the life story of Ella Fitzgerald told through her music. The performance is at 1 p.m. Sept. 2. Call Joanna Pierce at 534-4946 for reservations.
Funded in part by a Lifelong Learning Grant from the Minnesota Humanities Center, the program is open to the public for a fee of $6. For Unlimited Learning members, the program is part of this year's membership. Scholarships are available.
