'Sylvia' continues CLC Summer Theatre season THEATER
What if your dog could talk? That is the comic premise of A.R. Gurney's "Sylvia," the second show of Central Lakes College's Summer Theatre season. It will be staged at 7:30 p.m. July 15-19 and 22-26 in the Chalberg Theatre on the Brainerd campus.
Tickets are $5 for the public and free for CLC students.
Written by the author of "Love Letters," the play centers on Greg (Erik Steen, Brainerd), a middle-aged New Yorker who is seeking something real in life. Along comes Sylvia (Dwana Paplow, Brainerd). Unfortunately, Greg's wife Kate (Jean Lesmeister) doesn't share in the excitement of taking Sylvia into their life.
Steen has appeared in CLC shows such as "Wait Until Dark" and "The Odd Couple." He also directed CLC's "A Perfect Wedding" and Pequot Lakes Community Theatre's "How the Other Half Loves." He is a veteran of Theatre in the Round in Minneapolis and national and regional television commercials.
Paplow has performed at CLC in "Night Must Fall," "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol" and "The Man Who Came to Dinner." The Fulda native is the theater technician at CLC.
Lesmeister, making her CLC debut, recently returned to Minnesota after many years in Denver. She holds a Master's in acting from the University of San Diego and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Aaron Greene of Little Falls, a recent CLC graduate, will play three different roles: Tom, a fellow dog owner; Phyllis, a college chum of Kate; and Leslie, a tightly-wound therapist. Greene appeared in "A Perfect Wedding" and "Night Must Fall."
Patrick Spradlin will direct, Dennis Lamberson will design sets and lights and David Wilson will design costumes.
"Sylvia" will be staged in its uncensored form on July 15, 17, 19, 23 and 25. A family friendly version will be staged on July 16, 18, 22, 24 and 26.
Patrons are invited to bring a photo of their dog for display in the theater lobby. At the conclusion of the show's run, the most photogenic dog will be selected and its owner will receive season tickets to the 2008-09 CLC Performing Arts Series.
HART of Brainerd/Baxter will have a display in the lobby featuring dogs available for adoption.
