Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd will receive a $20,000 grant from the Brainerd Lakes Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The grant will be awarded Saturday morning at the Race for the Cure event at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.
Woodland's plan is to make an impact on breast cancer in the community through education on prevention and early detection.
The Good Samaritan Society employs nearly 750 people in this community and 85 percent are women. The plan is to reach out to these women, as well as residents in the Senior Living and Assisted Living homes along with friends and family members in the community.
55-plus driver improvement course offered
The Minnesota Highway Safety Center will be offering the 55-plus Driver Improvement Course on the following days:
The four-hour refresher course will be offered from 9 a.m. -1 p.m. July 16 at the Crosslake Community Center; from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. July 22 at Breezy Point City Hall; 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. July 22 at the Hallett Community Center; 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. July 24 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church; 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. July 24 at Emily Charter School; 3-7 p.m. July 28 at the Aitkin Public Library; 1:30 - 5;30 p.m. July 30 at Sacred Heart Church in Hackensack; 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. July 31 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa; 8 a.m. - Noon Aug. 1 at Pequot Lakes High School.
The full eight-hour course will be offered from 9 am.-1 p.m. July 23 and 24 at the Crosslake Community Center; Aug. 4 and 5 at Emily Charter School.
Pre-registration is required. A MN Highway Safety & Research Center-certified instructor will teach the class.
The fee for the four-hour refresher course is $18 and the eight-hour course is $20. For more information or to register call toll free 1-(888)-234-1294. People 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10 percent discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law.
Motorcycle rider courses scheduled in Brainerd
Central Lakes College has scheduled basic and experienced motorcycle rider courses in July.
Basic Rider is scheduled at the Brainerd campus July 17, 19, and 20. Experienced Rider will be July 26. Basic Rider is for the beginner but can also challenge experienced riders.
The fee is $160. Dates and times are 5:30-10 p.m. July 17 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or 2-7 p.m. July 19 and July 20.
Payment is required at the time of registration. Registration deadline is July 10.
Experienced Rider is offered Saturday, July 26, at the Brainerd campus.
CLC offers this five-hour, advanced riding class for those with at least one year or 1,000 miles of riding experience. The class meets from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Fee is $55 and registration with payment must be completed by July 18.
