A downtown area identified as being in need of an improvement received a makeover on Thursday.
The parking lot garden between the Blue Ox and Downtown Art & Frame in Brainerd was transformed from a rough looking section into a garden with the help of volunteers.
The Brainerd Lakes Chamber reported it took 11 people one hour to plant the garden and the same number of people worked two hours the day before to prepare the site.
In addition to planting, volunteers pulled plastic, tilled, added compost, weeded, picked up litter and spread mulch to bring the garden to life.
Master Gardeners, Rick Madges, owner of the Blue Ox, neighboring businesses, Sentence to Serve, property owners, and students from the Warrior Way all volunteered their time to make this project happen.
Donations from businesses and property owners covered the costs needed to complete the project.
The Brainerd Main Street Program is a community-based effort to revitalize Brainerd's Central Business District. Though it is part of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, it is for members and non-members alike.
