Blue Thunder rally, lose NORTHWOODS LEAGUE
The Brainerd Blue Thunder rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth before falling 5-4 to the Alexandria Beetles in Northwoods League baseball Sunday night at Mills Field.
Trailing 5-1 entering the ninth, Brainerd's Nick DiBiasse scored on a wild pitch, Curtis Restko had a sacrifice fly and Jeff Lockwood's RBI single pulled the Thunder within the final score.
Alexandria pitcher Nick Gaudi ended the game by getting Blue Thunder catcher Trey Lucas to ground into a fielder's choice.
Alexandria first baseman Brian Harrison hit a three-run homer in the eighth and finished 3-for-4.
Lockwood had two hits for Brainerd.
Alexandria's Brandon Efferson pitched seven innings to get the win. He struck out nine, walked two and gave up one earned run and five hits.
Brainerd reliever Michael Gedman suffered his first loss in four decisions. He allowed three earned runs and two hits with one walk in the eighth.

Saturday's games
Crowd of 1,040 sees second game
The Blue Thunder scored five runs in the fifth inning for a 5-2 lead but were unable to prevent a four-run Alexandria sixth as they lost the second game of a doubleheader 6-5 against the Beetles Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 1,040.
Lockwood pitched five solid innings, scattering four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
Brainerd jumped on Beetles starter Justin Jackson in the five-run fifth, highlighted by an Adam Petterson two-run single. Mitch Caster, Jared McDonald and Tim Winslow had RBIs in the inning as well for Brainerd.
Jackson was replaced by Matt Hill (3-0) who pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the win after Thunder reliever Casey Geiger gave up four runs in one-third of an inning.
Gaudi, the Beetles' closer, slammed the door in the ninth with two strikeouts to record his fourth save.
In the afternoon game of the doubleheader the Blue Thunder lost to the Beetles 23-2.
Caster had both RBIs for Brainerd and Petterson collected two of Brainerd's eight hits.
Brian Diemer tossed a complete game with six strikeouts to win his second game for the Beetles. Bryan Holaday had the big game for Alexandria, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and seven RBIs.
The doubleheader marked the opening of the second half of the season for both teams. The Blue Thunder finished the first half 10-19 record and 7 1/2 games behind North Division first-half champion Mankato.
